Carols by Candlelight
“We are celebrating our 61st year of Carols by Candlelight, an event that is traditionally held in the open,” said David Crossley, Rotary’s president. Johannesburg City’s welfare department, along with a few members of the Rotary Club, started the event in 1949, and since then it has become synonymous with Zoo Lake as a true Johannesburg heritage tradition, and the beginning of the festive season.
“There is something magical about families coming together with a picnic basket to listen to and sing carols,” said Crossley, “because as soon as you move it to a hall or closed space, it changes the whole dynamic.”
This year, guests will be able to enjoy treats from various food and drink vendors while listening to and singing along with Rosebank Union Church’s choir, which will also perform the nativity. Jonathan Rands, who played Percy Fitzpatrick in Jock of the Bushveld, will act as narrator between songs.
Entrance to the candlelight evening is free, and Crossley said it is possible to “come and enjoy it without spending money”. But the organisers will try to cover their costs by selling candles with holders for R10 and song sheets for an additional R5.
Crossley advises people to start arriving by 5.30pm so that their little ones can get the most out of the event. There will be plenty of parking, with most of it around Zoo Lake Bowling Club. Security for the cars will also be provided.
To ensure that the festivities remain merry, the Rotary Club has arranged safety measures. The South African Police Service (SAPS) will be there, with SAPS divers and reservists, along with Chubb, the private security company. St John’s Ambulance service will be on standby in case of emergency
· After a succession of Moyo concerts, Jazz on the Lake and Joburg Pride all taking place at Zoo Lake, the residents have had enough! The traffic problems and road closures as well as high levels of noise and an abundance of litter have led ward councillor, Amanda Forsythe, to call for future events to be hosted in other natural environments while Zoo Lake and its neighbours have a break.
The councillor explained that Zoo Lake, as a natural environment, needs time to recover between events. Besides Carols by Candlelight, no other official events may take place at the lake this year.
