The Braai Shack

Catering to the ‘traditional’ market, TBS offers home-brewed favourites such as chicken pap and gravy, blade steaks and boerie rolls, all cooked in South Africa’s favourite style – the braai. The concept is based on ‘tshisa nyama’ (the Zulu word for a kasi-style braai) according to operations manager Tendai Dzvova. “The idea is for clients to feel like they are enjoying a low-price meal in a kasi shack, right in the heart of shopping Mecca Rosebank.”

TBS is a brand partnership, part of founder Liz Sanjoin’s WIFAH – Women in Food and Hospitality – which is based on identifying South African women's economic development priorities and opportunities and fostering their expansion. “All the other food franchises like Nandos and Spur are foreign based and owned ... TBS is the first real SA brand, and aims to expand in the near future,” says Tendai.

The real beauty of TBS is that you have the option of buying your own nyama and braaing it yourself. In addition to the spacious inside area, there’s an on-street outside eating area, while at the rear is the ‘Back Room’ which can be booked for private functions, where you can either braai yourself or aks TBS to do the honours.

Open till late, TBS is licensed and is perfectly positioned between the malls of Rosebank and the clubs on Jan Smuts Avenue. Testament to its winning concept is the fact that clients of all race, age and class are fast filling its benches. Spot you there ...
